Most people understand the IRA as a retirement vehicle that includes a
Traditional, Roth and SEP. With a traditional IRA, the custodian normally
restricts what you can invest in i.e., a selection of Mutual Funds. A Self
Directed IRA which was created in 1974, is different from the other three in
that the accountholder of the IRA can "direct" it himself instead of a broker.
The investor determines which investment(s) are appropriate and tells the
custodian where to invest the IRA account. The bottom line is that Self Directed
IRA's allow investors to make their own investment decisions. There is a wide
range of investments that the IRS allow an IRA to invest in such as Real Estate,
Land, precious metals such as Gold and Silver. There are only two investments
that an IRA is prohibited in investing in and that is Collectibles and Life
Insurance. Those two are classified as prohibited transactions under code
section 4975.
